about greyhound.mousetrap.net

Purpose

This site is intended as a gateway through which the casual public can easily find more information on greyhounds and greyhound adoption.

greyhound.mousetrap.net, does not intend to offer in-depth information. For that kind of resource, the user is directed to internet FAQs and local adoption groups by menus and links collections. In particular, current 'hound owners probably will find little new information here.

traffic

Traffic to this site generally comes from these sources:
  1. mail/news signatures
  2. I carry around a business card the URL on it. Cards are cheap from OfficeMax or wherever (the plain ones are around $10 for a box of 1000). I'll scan one soon.
  3. search engines

Technical stuff

greyhound.mousetrap.net runs on Team Mousetrap's main web server, a WinTel box running Debian Linux and the Apache webserver (HTML compression on).

Page layout is CSS and page construction is template-driven (orb) and is otherwise handcoded in vi. Graphic duties handled by Photoshop.

This site is distributed under the Free Documentation License, which basically means you can do with it what you want with it, as long as you credit the original source. If you distribute the resulting document do so as FDL. Read the license for actual details. "Share and enjoy!"

Why do it at all?

Greyhounds are striking animals that cause people to stop, stare, and ask questions. Giving the people a "take-away" (card or flyer with the URL) will, IMO, greatly increase the chances that they will learn more about the dogs.

Using a webpage for the resource is a natural because it can service the public 24/7, and can provide more info than might be delivered in a chance park meeting. It is also is a cost-effective medium (essentially free in this case).
